the soldiers in fort sumter were under command of major robert anderson. fort sumter is on a island in charleston harbor guarding the city itself.after president lincoln was inaugerated on march 1st,the south decided to take it.on the night of april 11, 1861 a southern leader told anderson to surreder. anderson refused. the south said they would begin shooting at twelve. at twelve fort sumter was not shot at. at 4:30 on april the 12 at the crack of dawn 176 guns open fired on fort sumter. the soldiers got in the basement. at about 8 a.m. the fort fell. the courts ruled the south had to give fort sumter back. the south gave it back after the war
